Professor Goodship undertook training in adult and paediatric medicine before training in Clinical Genetics. She undertook her research training at the Institute of Child Health, London and the Department of Cell Biology, Harvard Medical School. She is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians UK (1997). She was appointed Professor of Medical Genetics at the Institute of Human Genetics, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK in 2001. She is Academic Director of the Clinical Genetics Service in the Northern Region of England and the Academic Vice President of the Clinical Genetics Society in the UK.  Professor Goodship has a strong track record in collaborative research and is a Line leader in two cardiovascular EU funded initiatives: HeartRepair and CHeartEd. She is also a member of an international consortium that has obtained Wellcome Trust funding to undertake a genome-wide association study of cardiovascular malformations.
